New Grower: Leilani’s Farm and Nursery

I am very excited to welcome Lelani and Alan of Leilani’s Farm and Nursery to our family of growers and vendors! They will provide the market local, seasonal, organically grown and Certified Naturally Grown vegetables, berries, and herbs. In addition, in the Spring, they will offer plants, flowers, and hanging baskets.

Nestled in the foothills of north Georgia, Leilani’s has served the north Georgia area for 18 years. From the very beginning Leilani’s has been an all-natural grower of quality Produce and Herb, Vegetable, and Fruit plants.

Leilani’s follow the strict organic standards of Certified Naturally Grown and are proud to display their symbol of quality. They use “no till” naturally-evolving soil development, and never use harsh fertilizers, just natural aged manures, compost, and worm castings. They also don’t use chemicals, just natural and organic biological controls to ensure optimum food safety.

They plan to be on the market all year rounding providing Organic Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Okra, and Beans from late Spring to Fall. Lettuce, Kale, Spinach, Carrots, and more are available in the cooler seasons.

They are committed to producing the best Edible Plants for your garden and the freshest, healthiest Produce for your table!

Group Buy: Wild Caught Shrimp

This is the last weekend we will take orders for Ocean to Table, HACCP Certified Wild Caught Georgia Shrimp from St. Simons Island Shrimp Specialist (SISS)!

This product is available for pickup the first Tuesday in October (THIS UPCOMING TUESDAY. OCTOBER 4TH). These shrimp are large (26 count per lb.)“heads-off” shrimp. This is a recurring monthly group buy.

SISS will be offering shrimp are IQF and in frozen block. For the IQF shrimp, you can just reach into bag and grab as many as you need to use. The IQF shrimp are the creme de la creme of shrimp. They are fresh caught and “headed”, then placed into a salt brine tank for 10 min and flash frozen right on the boat to ensure freshness. These IQF shrimp are fresher than fresh, when you thaw them out, it’s like they just came out of the ocean! When you buy fresh shrimp they have already been out of the water and on ice for 24-48 hrs. Fresh shrimp will stay good on ice for up to 3-5 days. The IQF shrimp have a 6 month shelf life.

The frozen shrimp in 5lb blocks are blast frozen (to ensure freshness) and then packaged in our restaurant delivery boxes for your convenience for your freezer. Shelf life up to 2 years. If you would like to thaw out just a few at a time, open box, pull back bag and run COLD water over portion of frozen block until you can get what you need then, close up bag and box and put back in freezer.

These same shrimp sell for $12.99 per pound at our local grocers on the coast of Georgia. If you can find them in the Atlanta area they will be at least $15 per pound. Take advantage of the great price of $9.99 per lb!

I’m looking forward to shrimp scampi, boiled shrimp, grilled shrimp kabobs, shrimp and grits, shrimp jambalaya, shrimp salad, shrimp stock … OK now I’m starting to sound like Bubba from Forest Gump but you get the point!

Wild Caught Shrimp is an excellent source of Tryptophan (an essential amino acid), Vitamin B12, Healthful fats, including omega-3, saturated fat and cholesterol, Selenium, Protein, an Astaxanthin.

If you are a seafood lover you are won’t be disappointed!
